Beyond Nome

There are three gravel roads headed out of Nome, one to the east, one to the northwest, and one to the north. Each of them has a version of the sign above. The eastward road travels along the coast for about 30 miles before heading inland into the mountains ending 72 miles from Nome at the Niukluk River across from the town of Council. The northwest road travels into the hills for 71 miles before descending to the seaside town of Teller. The northern road travels about 90 miles into the mountains before ending as a jeep trail that seems to just fade away. While birding, I have driven about 30 miles towards Teller, 50 miles towards Council, and about 50 miles north into the mountains. For this post, I thought I would just share a collection of photos of the beautiful wilderness surrounding Nome. Enjoy.
