Back to the USA

Unfortunately, my GI issues got worse rather than better despite active medical treatment. Last Friday, I checked myself into a hospital here in Bucharest. Fortunately, 4 days of IV antibiotics has done the trick, although I have another 10 days of oral antibiotics to ensure that I remain well. Above is the route that I actually rode. I started about 100 miles outside of Paris in Troyes France and ended 25 riding days and a bit over 1500 miles later in Alba Lulia Romania about 300 miles shy of Bucharest.

While this trip did not end the way that I wanted it to, it was still a terrific trip. I really enjoyed the people I was cycling with. The riding itself was great as my blog posts describe. I am sad that I did not manage to last 3 more days, since the 5000’ climb to Balea Lake was spectacular from what everyone told me, and the descent the next day was also terrific. According to some of my fellow riders, next two days into Bucharest were some of the worst riding because of busy roads, limited shoulders, and fairly aggressive drivers.

Tomorrow, I fly back home. When I first checked into the hospital, my situation was potentially quite serious with the possibility of surgery being necessary. So Kate dropped everything and flew out to be with me. Here is a photo of us back at the hotel shortly after I was discharged. At this point, I am looking forward to being home.

Thanks to everyone who sent me good wishes either directly or through Kate.
