To Ulm, Germany

Today we rode another 57 miles along the Danube River. However, today’s route spent much more time winding through towns.

The weather was like yesterday morning, cool and constantly threatening rain. Unlike yesterday, the weather did not clear as the day progressed.

Early in the ride, I saw a few flashes of lightning in the distance, but I couldn’t hear the thunder, so the lightning was not close.

I managed to stay dry for about the first 20 miles, but shortly after this photo, it started raining.

The rain was intermittent, and between rain showers, the sun would occasionally partially pop out for a few moments. It did so as I was taking this photo setting off this church nicely from the dark clouds behind.

There were some periods where we were on a bike path near the river, but it was a much smaller portion of today’s ride.

I liked this large colorful stork, so here it is in my blog.

The centers of many of the towns are very scenic. Often there are areas where cars are prohibited, leaving the space for pedestrians and cyclists.

There were a few places where we were in the woods. A reasonable portion of the ride was on gravel. With the rain, this meant that my bike and I were splattered with wet gravel dust. I took about 20 minutes after the ride to wipe down my bike, clean the drive train, and oil the chain.

Here is one final church to end today’s post. Tomorrow is a rest day. Since I biked from Basel Switzerland back to Freiburg Germany on my last “rest day”, I have now biked 8 days in a row covering 450 miles. I’m looking forward to taking tomorrow off.
