To Passau, Germany

I do not have a whole lot of inspiration for writing tonight, so today’s post will be light on commentary. I rolled out of Straubing this morning to a beautiful day with cool temperatures.

At 8:00 am, the streets were mostly empty near our hotel.

Here is a photo of the Danube as I rode out of town.

Soon, we were on a bike path. There is a gravel path along the top of the berm with a paved path below. The Danube River is on the other side of the berm which is there for flood control.

I enjoy passing these small churches often in the middle of nowhere. I think there was only one house within half a mile of this church.

Here I am riding on the berm. While the gravel is slower to ride on, the view from the top is definitely better. In some places, the gravel path on the top was for pedestrians only, but it did not seem to be the case here.

There were places on today’s ride where the route we were given tried to put us on a more or less non-existent path by the river. Mostly, I stayed on the berm or the road next to it, about 250 yards to my left, but every now and then, I would pop out to make sure there was not a nice path here that I could not see from the distance.

As we have biked down the river, there have been places where there are small ponds near the river such as this one. Often I would see birds in places such as this. There are birds here as well, but they are sufficiently far away that they are hard to distinguish from the rocks even zoomed in at the highest resolution.

This is a hydro-electric dam not far from Passau, our destination.

These are the locks to the side of the hydro-electric dam, allowing the river barges to travel up and down stream.

I liked the painting hung up on the side of this house.

Finally, our hotel today is right on the Danube about a quarter mile farther down this walkway. Tomorrow we enter Austria as we ride another 100k down the river.
