To Lakitelek, Hungary

This photo is of the main building of Budapest University of Technology and Economics. It was founded in 1782, making it one of the oldest technology universities in the world. I took the photo shortly after leaving our hotel as we followed the Danube River south for a few final kilometers before branching off to the southeast as the Danube continued south.

In the outskirts of Budapest, we had a few sections of “interesting” bike paths.

This is my last photo of the Danube River before we split off. From an aesthetics perspective, this is a bit of a disappointing way to end 13 days and over 800 miles of following the Danube. However, this will not be the last time we see the Danube. We will need to cross it once more since it is now to the west of us but ultimately flows into the Black Sea which is to our east.

Most of our riding today was on low traffic back roads such as this one. While the scenery was not spectacular, I found it varied enough to keep the ride from being monotonous.

We did not pass by many churches today, but here is one I did photograph as I cycled by.

It was very hot today. The temperature when I arrived at our hotel was just about 100 F. However, my body handled the heat considerably better than the ride into Budapest last Thursday. I am sure that the rest day in Budapest, where I napped both in the morning and in the afternoon, helped considerably. I also wore my sun sleeves, hydrated constantly, and regularly soaked my top and sleeves in cold water. I think all of these contributed to a reasonably good day of cycling for me despite the heat.

Nonetheless, it was nice to get to our hotel for the night. We have 4 more riding days in the heat before our next rest days, and they are all supposed to have highs in the upper 90s. Tomorrow’s ride is similar to today’s at 75 miles. I am keeping my fingers crossed that tomorrow will feel more like today and less like last Thursday.
