To Donauworth Germany
Today we rode another 57 miles down the Danube River to Donauworth Germany. Much of today’s riding was on well maintained gravel bike paths. The temperatures were very pleasant, generally in the low 70s.
Today is just our third day riding on the Danube, and already it is a far larger river than its humble beginning in Donaueschingen.
At this point, we periodically see dams to generate hydroelectric power and to manage the flow of the river.
About midday through today’s ride, we went through the town of Lauingen which is sometimes referred to as the City of Towers. This was the first church we passed. Below are 4 more towers we passed by on our route through town.
Leaving town and rejoining the bicycle path, I passed by this memorial.
I stopped briefly here to put a bandaid on my middle toe of my right foot where I had managed to develop a small blister. The previous bandaid had come off. To keep this one secure, I covered it with three loops of electrical tape. That hack worked perfectly for the rest of the ride.
The “City of Towers” certainly did not have a monopoly on lovely towers. Here is one from the next town.
Late in today’s ride, we passed Castle Schloss Dillingen. In the 10th century, a fortress was built on this site which housed the Counts of Dillingen. Over time, it became the residence of the Prince-Bishop of Augsburg. It was rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1595. It currently houses government offices.
Tomorrow is another 60 miles down the Danube.
