NY Finger Lakes

Kate and I recently got back from spending 4 nights with friends in the Finger Lakes region of NY. This year, there were 9 of us: Jesse, Ruth, Doug, Trish, Leslie, Mark, Jennifer, Kate and me. Jesse, Ruth, Leslie, Mark, Doug, and I were the hard core bicyclists (the pain crew). Trish, Jennifer, and Kate were the sensible riders (the vacation crew).

This year, we were staying just south of Penn Yan. For our three days of riding, the pain crew cycled around Seneca Lake, Keuka Lake, and Canandaigua Lake. All told, we rode 227 miles and climbed about 12,000 feet. The last two years, we have stayed south of Geneva on Lake Seneca, so this year we skipped Cayuga Lake to the east and added Canandaigua Lake to the west.

We had fabulous weather for the week. Each morning it was a bit chilly when we started out, but it warmed up nicely as each day went on.

Most of the ride around Seneca Lake was cycling through farmland. While there were a couple of places where our route ran alongside Seneca Lake, those spots were only a small portion of the 89 mile ride, and I did not end up taking any photos worth sharing.

We were generally on low traffic roads which made it easy to enjoy the views.

Our second day, we road around Lake Keuka. Most of our route was right alongside the lake.

We started on East Lake Road which was a quiet delight to cycle on.

Here is a photo of my bike at a park at the southern tip of Keuka Lake.

As we headed north along the west side of the lake, we climbed up onto the ridge line. Up here, we were bicycling among the vineyards with views of the lake and surrounding hills.

Here is a photo of some of the grape vines which were on both sides of the road.

Our final day we cycled around Canandaigua Lake. While I do love traveling to new places to cycle, bicycling in New England on a beautiful fall day really is fabulous.
